Why Romantasy?

I've been writing a loooooong time, and am creeping up on my 12 year publishing anniversary.

I started in epic fantasy, with very low romance subplots, and loved the thrill of creating a whole new world with magical creatures and swords and battles. Andvell was my home for four years

In 2016, I dipped my toe into urban fantasy, inspired to write mystery meets supernatural. The result was my Invisible Entente (now Dark Descendants) series, and I loved the opportunity to play in a modern world with a magical twist. Each book has a romance of a different flavour, which gave me space to explore different tropes, different emotions. Spoilers: turned out I enjoyed it!

It wasn't until my Ghostmaker Trilogy that I decided to draw the romance into more of the limelight, and having reread the series recently, I'm proud of my first attempt, but I see where I might have dug deeper and made it even yummier.

The Immortal Sorceress, and the centuries-long romance between Kat and Emrick was my leap into urban fantasy romance, and wow was it wonderful and challenging and eye-opening. And I continued learning with Alyssa and Trace, discovering how much I love my green-flag love interests—people who are flawed but do their best to be their best for the person they want to be with, even if they don’t always succeed.

Basically, over the years, I’ve discovered I love writing the tensions and yearning and acting on and doubting and giving in and fighting for of romance.

I love scenes that make me cackle, that create butterflies, that make me dance. All my years of honing my banter is really paying off in romantasy.

It also gives me the chance to return to my second-world fantasy, something I've missed.

Will I give up the urban fantasy? Probably not? Balance is nice. But I am excited to explore this new facet of my writing voice, and I hope you come along with me!
